Takema is located in the northern part of Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, near the border with Fukuoka Prefecture.

 

Known since ancient times as a producer of high-quality tea, Takema tea is one of Kumamoto's most representative premium teas.

 

In the area surrounded by mountains with an elevation of approximately 450m

 

Tea plantations, terraced rice fields, and small hamlets are scattered throughout the area, preserving the traditional rural landscape.

 

It's not a flashy tourist destination, but it's a place where you can encounter different scenery with every step you take.

 

 

 

 

Tea plantations and Takema tea

 

The tea plantation scenery is the biggest attraction in the Takema area.

 

From spring to early summer, vibrant new greenery spreads across the landscape, creating a magical scene on misty mornings and evenings.

 

The tea plantations spread across the mountain slopes are a prime example of the typical landscape of the Takema region.

 

Furthermore, Takema tea is a historically significant tea that was once designated as a tribute tea by the first lord of the Higo domain, Lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi.

 

Selected from among many teas, it has been passed down to the present day as a Japanese tea endorsed by feudal lords.
