What is Satoyama?
里山
Not all rural areas in Japan are "satoyama" (traditional rural landscapes).
While rural areas have public transportation and nearby national highways, the satoyama (rural mountain villages) do not. There are few people and shops, and it cannot be said to be a convenient place. However, the satoyama offers profound tranquility and the bounty of the mountains. There is the wisdom and warmth of people who have lived in harmony with nature and helped each other. Tea plantations, mountain water, irrigation canals, seasonal handicrafts. The culture and wisdom rooted in the land have been passed down from the past to the present through daily life.
Satoyama is not simply a place with a lot of nature.
Satoyama is not simply a rural area with few people.
People's lives themselves become landscapes and stories.
This is a place where traditions are passed down through generations.

Our accommodation is basically self-check-in and self-check-out.
For those who value quiet time, you can enjoy your stay without encountering anyone.
If you book an experience such as a tea ceremony, cooking class, or a guided tour of the satoyama (traditional Japanese rural landscape), we, who live and work in this satoyama, will welcome you.
As someone who has inherited the satoyama and lives in this land, I can share with you the current state of Takema.

MIZUKI
I am the owner of suyasuya. Ten years ago, I moved to Takema in Yamaga City as a member of the Japan Community-Reactivating Cooperator Squad. At suyasuya, I am responsible for creating the atmosphere of the inn, welcoming our guests, designing our website and photography, and organizing tea ceremony experiences and other cultural activities. As the buyer for Yamano Oku Zakkaten, I often travel overseas. During my travels, I have been helped by many local people. Here, I would like to return that kindness by supporting our guests and helping them enjoy their stay. Although my English is limited, I can speak a little Korean. Having experienced relocating to the countryside and starting a business in a rural community, I would be happy to share my perspective on life in Japan’s satoyama, rural living, and local culture.

SEIYA
I am the fourth-generation owner of “Takema no Sato Higashi,” a traditional teahouse in Takema. Born and raised in Takema, I continue the long-standing tradition of Takema tea. At our guesthouse, I am in charge of Experience A, “A Special Journey through the World of Takema Tea.” As one of the people carrying this tea tradition into the future, I can share stories about Takema’s history, its tea culture, and the community as it is today.

MAI
I am in charge of Experience B, “Cooking Seasonal Satoyama Cuisine.” Having worked overseas, I can communicate in English, Chinese, and Spanish. I may also accompany guests as an interpreter during the various experiences we offer. I usually work as a private guide, making use of my language skills, and I am also happy to assist with planning personalized tours. As someone who moved here from abroad, I will introduce you to the area from the unique perspective of an international resident.

NAOFUMI
In Takema, where tea, bamboo shoots, chestnuts, and rice are the main agricultural products, I am carrying on the land and its traditions as a local farmer. I once moved away from my hometown, but I have since returned to Takema, where I grew up, and am now raising my own child here. I understand not only the realities and challenges facing the community, but also its unique strengths. During Experience C, “Discovering Takema: A Walk through the Satoyama Countryside,” I will guide you through the area from the perspective of someone who was born and raised here.
